The Pigeon Point Lighthouse with its fresnel lens lit. In this yearly ceremony, they turn on the light for 5 minutes and let it stay stationary – the beams reaching out into the night sky. After that, the light will slowly turn for two hours until they shut it off.

A funny picture with a slightly darker sub-context:

Man trapped between a fellow passenger’s feet in a truck in Niger.

Crowded, extreme conditions of transport are both everyday life of people Niger, as well as usual fate of those who try to cross Sahara in the big trucks. Many of them die, of thirst, or abandoned during long arduous journey by people traffickers, all in vain attempt to reached paradise called Europe.

detroit waltz, originally uploaded by g. s. george.

Would be nice to see this bigger. It’s a shot of modern day Lee Plaza Apartments in Detroit, Michigan. A family friend spent some time in Detroit recently and he said it was a bit like being in a town after it had been bombed. This grand piano has certainly seen better days.

A Tanzanian tribal sorcerer and his assistant, starting a traditional dance around the Moi International Sports Complex, the venue for the VII World Social Forum. There were dancers and drummers coming and playing many whistles . I can still hear their sound.
