Cataracts

cataract, originally uploaded by Amsterdamned!.

Tag search ‘candid’. This was taken in Marakkech, Morocco. It’s a great shot – like a scene from Biblical times.

An excerpt from wiki:

A cataract is an opacity that develops in the crystalline lens of the eye or in its envelope. Early on in the development of age-related cataracts the power of the crystalline lens may be increased, causing near-sightedness (myopia), and the gradual yellowing and opacification of the lens may reduce the perception of blue colours. Cataracts typically progress slowly to cause vision loss and are potentially blinding if untreated.[1]

It’s the ‘untreated’ bit that is upsetting in this shot. Cataracts are now relatively easy to deal with – there is a doctor in India who does 100 procedures a day. Morocco does not have a welfare state or a national health service so this guy is presumably out of luck.
