Maria by Paul Dzik.

A striking image. She reminds me of one or two of the matriarchal figures I got to know travelling through rural Ireland as a child. It’s the mouth and eyes – the stubborn determination. As far as I can remember, neither people nor dogs would pick fights with such women!

Human interest aside, there’s something about the space around her that looks wrong to me. I am guessing the original background has been removed to draw attention to the subject. It’s often difficult to do this convincingly in Photoshop-style packages when jagged edges (such as a head of hair) are involved. I have yet to crack this particular problem. I’m sure it’s a problem that can ultimately be solved by software – perhaps a tool already exists.
