On the outskirts of Guanajuato there is a museum of mummies. They have been exhumed over the years when it was discovered that this pauper’s cemetery was located in soil which preserved the remains – skin, hair, clothes – for several hundred years. Mexico, in general, has a more accepting, if not embracing, view of death (i.e. Day of the Dead, with its skulls and skeletons, is a celebration, acceptance and remembrance of the dead). Thus, the museum, with its seventy or so mummified remains, is a popular venue for families.
And there was me thinking family trips to Disneyland were horrific…
